Automating emission calculations in construction
Topsector Logistiek is a Dutch initiative that promotes collaboration between logistics parties to drive innovation and sustainability within the sector.
One of its programs, “Mobiele Werktuigen en Bouwlogistiek,” connects stakeholders to share knowledge and address common challenges, aiming to reduce nitrogen and CO₂ emissions.

Unknown emission figures
Market participants face difficulties obtaining building permits for ground, water, and road projects.
The main bottleneck is nitrogen deposition and its effect on Natura 2000 areas. Concrete emission figures are required for permits, but these are often unavailable during the tendering phase.
Misaligned responsibilities
The expertise to determine emission figures often lies with the wrong party: project developers must obtain permits, while the technical knowledge sits with executing contractors.
This leads to an imbalance of responsibilities across market participants.
Our answer to these challenges is the Emissievoorspeller: a user-friendly calculation tool that guides users step by step through entering the required data.
The calculation tool
- Uses construction company data to calculate CO₂ and nitrogen emissions for:
- planned use of mobile machinery and
- transport to and from the construction site.
- Simplifies the permitting process by sending results directly to AERIUS for deposition calculations.
- Automatically provides users with calculation results and supporting documents.
Simulations
The tool also enables users to create and compare scenarios using different types of equipment.
This gives project developers clear insight into how equipment and transport choices affect total emissions.
