NextEnergy is a scale-up energy technology company and offers dynamic energy prices to its customers. These are prices that can vary per day or even per hour. By using energy at the right times, customers can save a lot of money.

NextEnergy originated from a new venture collaboration with Quatronic, in which we have been responsible from the very beginning for developing NextEnergy’s technical systems.

The necessity of a custom system

The idea behind NextEnergy is unique: allowing customers to benefit from fluctuations in energy prices in all kinds of smart ways. However, this unique business model requires very specific functionalities from its technical system. That’s why there was a need for a tailor-made IT solution. This ensures we have full control over the development of the desired functionalities and can quickly adapt to changes in the market.

Gaining knowledge about the energy market

Starting an energy company is a challenge, not only on a technical level. For example, in order to know which functionalities the IT solution must provide, it is important to understand what requirements are imposed on energy suppliers, what the communication protocols are in the market, and how fluctuations in energy prices can be leveraged to advantage. Our consultants are more than just developers—they have done a great deal of research before and during the development of functionalities.

For this project, we set a very ambitious deadline, in which we built a system capable of serving customers in just 8 months.

Solution

Using the low-code platform OutSystems, we created a set of applications and automated processes.

Automated processes

Behind the scenes at an energy supplier, there is an enormous number of processes taking place: processing new contract requests, communicating with other suppliers, retrieving data from energy meters, and so on. We have automated all of these processes. Only in exceptional cases do human actions come into play.

Back office

For NextEnergy employees, a back office has been developed. In this web application, employees have insight into customer and contract data, can view the status of processes, and perform the necessary manual actions.

Apps for customers

NextEnergy customers can use the mobile app we developed. In it, they can view their consumption and energy prices, and update their personal information. The app’s functionality has since been continuously expanded.
